Following the recent Court of Appeals decision, drone pilots operating in compliance with section 336 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act are not required to register their aircraft. This section only applies to aircraft used for hobby and recreational purposes. Pilots who are in compliance, are eligible for a refund and can have their registration deleted.
While this is good news for the recreational and hobbyist pilot, owners of all other small unmanned aircraft, including newly-purchased unmanned aircraft not operated exclusively in compliance with section 336, remain subject to the registration requirement.
